Half a century of innovation
For more than 50 years Portasilo has been meeting the diverse needs of customers across the full spectrum of bulk handling and storage applications. Here we chart some of the key milestones over our history...
1952 - Donald Shepherd invents a lightweight 10-tonne capacity cement silo and Pullwey weighing device that can be transported by lorry.
1953 - Portasilo registered as a limited company.
1953 - Portahopper designed by Donald Shepherd.
1956 - Portasilo begins to manufacture all-steel silos to handle other powder products, including animal feeds and salt.
1960 - With expansion into other bulk-handling markets, Portasilo begins to design larger and more complex systems, along with sophisticated electrical control systems to handle diverse materials.
1964 - Portasilo moves to a new purpose-built office and manufacturing facility in Huntington, York.
1965 - Portasilo introduces the Powerwey - the first cement weigher designed for high-speed mixers and plants that require a high standard of accuracy.
1967 - Direct feed Portasilo launched - a high level silo with an integrated batch weigher.
1969 - Portasilo launches Portabatcha - a portable concrete plant.
1971 - Portasilo supplies ten silos, pneumatic conveying systems and batch weigh hoppers for a major new production facility for ICI Paints, complete with recipe control and batching system.
1975 - Portasilo launches a silo with extending legs and lorry-mounted tanker skip.
1988 - Portasilo Oscibar discharger and Superflo pneumatic conveyor launched.
1990s - Portasilo launches Vibroflo vibratory discharger, Augerflo screw discharger, Osciflo discharger and Siloflo aeration dischargers.
1995 - Advanced Rotoflo discharge unit launched.
1995 - Portasilo launches Moduflo self-acting regulating valve for the Superflo pneumatic conveying system.
1996 - Portasilo Technical Services formed to provide lifetime care packages to keep silos working at optimum efficiency. The services available include repairs, maintenance and plant upgrades.
1996 - Rotoflo discharger wins recognition in Manufacturing Achievement Awards.
1999 - Low-profile variant of the Rotoflo discharger launched for sites with limited headroom.
2001 - Portasilo develops horizontal silo, which can be transported by flatbed vehicle - ideal for temporary storage requirements.
2003 - PRV350 combined pressure and vacuum relief valve developed to protect silos from high and low pressures during filling and emptying.
