Silo Safety
Characteristics
Silos can be supplied for pressure resistance or pressure/shock
resistance up to pressures of 10 bar gauge, in accordance
with EN 13445 or EN 14460. Portasilo Engineers will assist
in selecting the most cost effective means of protection for your application.
Equipment to prevent propagation is now classified as autonomous
protective equipment and requires third party certification.
Portasilo can supply and integrate such equipment and provide
ongoing technical support and planned maintenance.
Explosion Risk
ATEX directive 99/92/EC has been implemented in the UK as
part of DSEAR (The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmosphere
Regulations 2002) and is the responsibility of the end user.
DSEAR requires that, as far as is reasonably practical, the presence or use of a dangerous substance should
be avoided. Otherwise, steps must be taken to reduce quantities
to a minimum, to avoid, or minimise and control releases
and to prevent the formation of an explosive atmosphere including
the application of appropriate ventilation.
Fire Risk
Many products can self-heat in storage. This can be a biological
action (composting) often triggered by high moisture contents
or by a chemical action (oxidisation) which in itself, can
be triggered by the biological action. Prevention of the
biological action is possible, by determining the safe maximum
moisture content and by preventing condensation. A range
of air conditioning systems is available.
